Surgery

We offer a range of general surgical procedures for dogs and cats at Brockwell Vets. Our experienced veterinary team will discuss the necessary surgery for your pet. Some of the procedures that we offer include:

• Spaying and neutering: We offer routine spaying and neutering for dogs and cats of all ages. We also offer keyhole spaying for female dogs, which is a less invasive procedure that results in less pain and a quicker recovery.
• Lump removals: Lumps can come in all shapes and sizes and range from the benign to serious. We will ensure that a sensible work up is followed so we know that whatever surgery we do is right for your pet.
• Wound repair: Wounds come in all shapes and sizes and we have seen them all. We will discuss with you the best way to manage a wound – this might range from letting it heal on its own (sometimes mother nature knows best) to complex wound reconstruction.
• Abdominal surgery: We are experienced in a variety of abdominal surgeries, including emergency abdominal surgery, bladder surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, splenectomy and more.
• Laparosopy: We can perform organ biopsies, laparoscopic gastropexy, laparosocopic assisted bladder surgery and more. Please contact the team for more information and case suitability.
• Orthopaedic surgery: We use the team from the Small Animal Surgery Team (SAS). Our go to surgeon for orthopaedic surgery is Andre Perreira (https://www.smallanimalsurgery-in-house-referrals.co.uk/meet-the-team). We have had a long track record of working with him and he is a caring, focused surgeon who is almost always available to help us with orthopaedic cases.

What to Expect
On the day of surgery, please do not give breakfast but please ensure that water is available at all times. We will need you to bring your pet to the clinic early in the day – usually 8.30-9.30am. Please use this time to discuss any concerns you might have and how the patient has been in the days before surgery. We will want to know what medications they are having and when they were last given. We will then ask you to sign a consent form; this is a standard document that confirms what procedure we are performing and will discuss any additional procedures that may be requested. 

One of our team will then take your pet to our kennel area and we will get them bedded up. Rest assured that even the most nervous pets are often quite settled in the kennel. If you have specific concerns about any anxiety your pet might have we can discuss a later admit times (so less waiting) or even some calming medication prior to coming for surgery. 

Most surgery is performed under general anaesthesia (some minor procedures can be done under sedation and local anaesthesia). After the surgery, your pet will be closely monitored and we will call you to update you how the surgery went. Your pet will stay in our kennels before being discharged. For most routine surgeries we are able to discharge the pet at around 2-4pm and for more complex procedures we like to keep the monitored until the end of the day and are discharged between 6-7pm. 

We will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your pet at home. This will include information on pain relief, wound care, and activity restriction. We understand that having your pet undergo surgery can be a stressful time. We are here to answer any questions you may have.
