Heart Scans and Referrals

Heart Scans and Referrals

Heart scans are a non-invasive way to evaluate the structure and function of your pet’s heart. They can help diagnose a variety of heart conditions, including:

  • Heart murmurs: While some heart murmurs are harmless, others can indicate underlying heart disease. A heart scan can help determine the cause and severity of a murmur.
  • Breed predispositions: Certain breeds, such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Doberman Pinschers, and Boxers, are prone to specific heart conditions.
  • Monitoring existing conditions: For pets already diagnosed with heart disease, regular heart scans can track the progression of the condition and help us adjust treatment plans accordingly.

What happens during a heart scan?

A heart scan is a painless procedure that usually doesn’t require sedation. Your pet will lie comfortably on their side while a small probe is placed against their chest. This probe emits ultrasound waves that create images of the heart in real-time, allowing our vets to assess:

  • Heart size and shape: Enlarged chambers or thickened walls can indicate heart disease.
  • Valve function: Leaky or narrowed valves can disrupt blood flow.
  • Blood flow patterns: We can identify areas of turbulence or abnormal flow.
  • Heart muscle function: We can assess how effectively the heart is pumping blood.

What are the benefits of early detection?

Early detection of heart disease through heart scans allows us to:

  • Start treatment early: This can slow the progression of the disease and improve your pet’s quality of life.
  • Manage symptoms effectively: We can tailor treatment plans to your pet’s specific needs.
  • Prevent complications: Early intervention can help reduce the risk of heart failure and other serious health issues.

At Brockwell Vets, we are dedicated in providing the highest standard of care. Our experienced veterinary team and advanced equipment allow us to offer comprehensive cardiology services, including heart scans, to help your pet live a longer, healthier life.
